Gladiolus is a classic perennial known for its tall flower spikes. A great cutting flower named for the shape of their leaves, gladioli – from the Latin word “gladius,” meaning sword – have a history that spans from Africa to the Mediterranean.

  • An ancient name for the gladiolus was xiphium, from the Greek word xiphos, also meaning sword
  • Most gladioli originated in Africa and Asia and were not known in Europe until between 1739 and 1745 when they were introduced by travelers following the Indian Trade Route
  • The Mediterranean and British Gladiolus flowers were used to treat physical ailments.
  • Some parts of the Gladiolus plant are poisonous if ingested and handling some species may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.
  • With a gladiolus, you do not need to include a card expressing your feelings because the plant itself carries and imparts symbolic meaning to the recipient. Gladioli express strength of character, remembrance, faithfulness, and moral integrity.
